This Transmitter Will Charge Your Gadgets Through The Air

Usually, when tech companies speak rhapsodically about “wireless power,” what they mean is, “you can recharge your phone by setting it down on a mat.”

Well, OK. It’s slightly easier to put your phone down on a mat than to plug in its power cord.

Samsung built charging-mat receiver technology into its Galaxy S4 , S5  and S6 phones.
Example is Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge

But that’s not really wireless charging. It’s not charging through the air, like a WiFi signal. You can’t keep using the phone while it’s charging.

No wonder the wireless-mat thing hasn’t really caught on.....
The next wave, though, will probably get your attention.

Meet RF charging

At labs all over the world, engineers are getting true, distance charging technologies ready. That’s just what it sounds like: Thanks to a special transmitter, your phone, tablet, smartwatch, hearing aid, and fitness band will be charging all the time, as you go about your day. You won’t take them off. You won’t plug them in. And you’ll never worry about making it through the day on a charge.

The transmitter: a shiny black plastic box that looked something like an oversized WiFi router.

A product’s battery life, in fact, will become irrelevant.

So how close are we to this fantasy? Very, according to Steve Rizzone. He’s the CEO of a 50-person company called Energous, whose distance-charging technology (with the unfortunate name WattUp) is, he says, by far the closest to being ready for market. He came by Yahoo’s New York office to give me a demonstration.

Using a tablet as a remote control, he could turn on the transmitter; at that point, the phone’s “charging” indicator came on, right there in my hand—not plugged into anything. The phone was, in fact, getting an electric charge through the air.

Rizzone also had an electric votive candle on hand; its low power requirements were meant to represent a smartwatch or fitness band. Once again, he could tap a software switch on his tablet to make the candle light up, indicating that it was getting power.

Charging Through The Air.

The Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this going to fry my guts?

A: No. The transmitter is sending out an RF (radio-frequency) signal—the same kind of signal transmitted by WiFi or cellphones. Not only is the signal even weaker than your phone’s, but it’s reflective; it bounces off skin instead of going through it.

(To underscore the inability of these waves to penetrate the skin, Rizzone told me a story about a pacemaker manufacturer who contacted him. The manufacturer was all excited about WattUp. Imagine if we could recharge people’s pacemakers without requiring surgery to change the battery!
But there ya go. That won’t happen, because RF waves bounce off the body.)

Q: How does it work?

A: The transmitter contains an array of small RF antennas. They send out “23 dBm across a 120-degree directional span, creating a 3D pocket of energy using the 5.8GHz unlicensed ISM RF spectrum.”

Translated from Engineerspeak, that means a focused pocket of power will be collected by any receiver-equipped gadget that happens to be within a 120-degree arc from the transmitter.

The hard part is not wireless charging, Rizonne says; it’s focusing the array of antennas on each gadget. In WattUp’s implementation, your gadget’s Bluetooth circuitry provides a focusing target for the RF beams that converge from floor, ceiling, wall, and furniture reflections.

Q: Can it charge more than one thing at once?

A: Yes—up to 12 devices simultaneously.

Q: What’s the range?

A: The strength of the charging drops off rapidly with distance; at the moment, 15 feet is the maximum range of the transmitter.

At 5 feet, your gadget (actually, four of them at once) can receive a maximum of 4 watts. At 10 feet, it gets 2 watts; at 15 feet, 1 watt.

Q: Is the transmitter sucking power all the time?

A: No. When there aren’t any WattUp receivers in range, Rizzone says that the transmitter goes to sleep.

Q: What’s the deal with the tablet he’s using?

A: The WattUp system is designed to be configurable. You can specify which gadgets get priority when they’re in range, using either the phone/tablet app or a Web portal. You can also set up a schedule, so that cellphones get priority when you’re home, but your remote controls and wireless mouse get charged while you’re away.

Q: How much?

A: The transmitter will probably cost around $300; the necessary phone case to receive the signal will be in the $75 to $125 range, Rizzone says.

Q: When?

A: Steve told me that they expect these products to be available at the end of 2016 or early 2017. That’s only a year and a half from now!

NASA unveiled their “Warp Drive” ship – Faster than Light Spaceship

Ever since the sound barrier was broken, people have turned their attention to how we can break the light speed barrier.  But “Warp Drive” or any other term for faster-than-light travel still remains at the level of speculation.

The bulk of scientific knowledge concludes that it’s impossible, especially when considering Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. There are certainly some credible concepts in scientific literature, however it’s too soon to know if they are viable.

Science fiction writers have given us many images of interstellar travel, but traveling at the speed of light is simply imaginary at present.

In the meantime, science moves forward.  And while NASA is not pursuing interstellar flight, scientists here continue to advance ion propulsion for missions to deep space and beyond using solar electric power. This form of propulsion is the fastest and most efficient to date.

There are many “absurd” theories that have become reality over the years of scientific research.  But for the near future, warp drive remains a dream.

If you would like to know more about the theories of interstellar flight, you should visit the Tau Zero Foundation.  Marc Millis, a former NASA Glenn physicist, founded the organization to consider revolutionary advancements in propulsion.

NASA explains the idea of Alcubierre’s Warp drive through a simple example moving sidewalks at airports. The concept is made analogous to walking on a moving sidewalk, provided that the sidewalk moves faster than one’s walk. This can be executed by contracting spacetime in front of the ship and expanding spacetime behind the ship.

The requirement of negative energy is the major issue. The problem arising would be controlling an environment of negative energy and its effect which is separate to the ship’s working. The situation in which ship would move is completely unknown i.e. warp bubble exceeding speed of light. Warp drive also recalls the time travel issues as in case of Worm Hole transportation.

Mark Rademaker, artist, who worked with White in designing Warp drive ship explains that craft consists of the main ship settled between two massive rings of negative energy which would develop the warp bubble. This new version of the ship is more compact and chunkier. According to Harold White, the design accounts for the predictions made according to mathematics of an Alcubierre warp drive currently.

NASA considers the warp drive and faster-than-light travelling spaceships projects at an ‘speculation’ stage. The development cycles of NASA describe this to be an early stage for warp drive. It has only passed the initial ‘conjecture’ stage of development.

The whole concept of warp drive seems impossible to many, however, works of White have grabbed the attention of scientists across the globe. Criticism and research may lead to a positive results. Comment and debate on possibilities of this project.

Microsoft Cortana - Digital Assistant

Microsoft Cortana is an intelligent personal assistant developed by Microsoft for Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft Band, and coming to Windows 10,iOS, and Android.

It is named after Cortana, an artificial intelligence character in Microsoft's Halo video game series, with Jen Taylor, the character's voice actress, returning to voice the personal assistant's US-specific version.

Cortana was demonstrated for the first time at the Microsoft BUILD Developer Conference (April 2–4, 2014) in San Francisco. It has been launched as a key ingredient of Microsoft's planned "makeover" of the future operating systems for Windows Phone and Windows. As of 2015, Cortana is available as a beta to all users of Windows Phone 8.1  and Windows 10 Preview in the United States (US English), China (Mandarin Chinese), and the United Kingdom (UK English). Users in certain countries can also choose to opt-in to the alpha for the English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish versions of Cortana as of August 2014.

In 2015 Microsoft announced the availability for Windows 10 desktops as part of merging Windows Phone into the operating system at large. On the 26th of May, 2015 Microsoft announced that Cortana would also be available on other mobile platforms. An Android release is set for June 2015 followed by an iOS release later in the year.

Features:

Cortana's features include being able to set reminders, recognize natural voice without the user having to input a predefined series of commands, and answer questions using information from Bing (like current weather and traffic conditions, sports scores, and biographies).

Windows 8.1's universal Bing SmartSearch features are incorporated into Cortana, which replaces the previous Bing Search app which is activated when a user presses the "Search" button on their device.

Cortana also includes a music recognition service. Cortana can also roll dice and flip a coin by asking the commands "roll a die" (one die), "roll the dice" (two dice), and "flip a coin",Concert Watch is a feature that helps Cortana determine which bands or musicians you are interested in by monitoring your Bing searches.

Cortana also integrates with the Microsoft Band for Windows Phone devices if connected via bluetooth. On the Microsoft Band Cortana can make reminders and bring phone notifications.

Hey Cortana

Since the Lumia Denim series, launched in October 2014, active listening was added to Cortana, enabling it to be triggered with the phrase: “Hey Cortana,” even across the room and without the need to touch the phone. After the trigger phrase is spoken, Cortana can be controlled normally for tasks like setting a reminder, asking a question, or launching an app. Some devices from the United Kingdom by O2 have received the Lumia Denim update without the feature but this was later clarified as a bug and Microsoft had since fixed it.

Cortana also integrates with services like Foursquare to provide restaurant and local attraction recommendations

DISNEY IS ENTERING THE GAMING INDUSTRY WITH A STRANGE NEW PRODUCT PLAYMATION

Disney just announced what could be the hottest toy to hit shelves this Christmas. Playmation--Disney's attempt to get into the 'active play' play market that focuses heavily on wearable devices.

According to Tom Staggs, Chief Operating Officer of the Walt Disney Company, the product is, “play for the 21st century… physical play for a digital generation.”

Disney has used their partnership with Hasbro to help bring this product to life which, according to Staggs, "is a unique system of connected toys and wearables that combine the latest technology and Disney storytelling to inspire kids to run around and play using their imaginations.”

If you are still confused about what this product is, we all are, but to put it simply a kid will be able to put on Iron Man's repulser and be instantly linked with Jarvis, who will send them on missions.

These missions will require the kids to run around the house, jump behind furniture and dodge attacks. The repulser will be able to connect with other toys in the system too and will even be able to access power activators. It looks like Playmation will not be connected to a TV, and will force kids to use their imagination.

“Playmation takes the best the digital world has to offer and uses it to create supercharged, real world play." Said Leslie Ferraro, President of Disney Consumer Products.

"This is play updated for today’s kids," Ferraro continued, "bringing their imaginations to life as they go on active adventures alongside their favorite characters.”

Playmation will launch around October 2015, in the range of $120 dollars. Check out the trailer and demo below to get a little more info about what the Playmation is all about.

Are you ready to talk to JARVIS? Share this with your friends and start assembling your heroic team!
