NirSoft - Providing Unique Collection of Useful Freeware Utilities

NirSoft web site provides a unique collection of small and useful freeware utilities, all of them developed by Nir Sofer. I will add this on my Web watch list...

Nir Sofer, is  experienced developer with extensive knowledge in C++, .NET Framework, Windows API, and Reverse Engineering of undocumented binary formats and encryption algorithms.
NirSoft is a Web site of one man. In NirSoft, there is no CTO or CEO, there is no secretary, there is no development team, and there are no rented offices. The entire Web site and all the utilities that you can find here were developed by Nir Sofer.

NirSoft  utilities receive  amazing awards such as  Editor's Pick of wareseeker.com ,  received 6 ducks award (the best) at NoNags Web site, has been reviewed by Home Computer Magazine , rated with 5 bulls by BullDownload, received the best award on softonic.com, has been awarded by Softpedia with 5 stars and SoftPedia Pick Award and many more..

Advantages of NirSoft utilities

For almost every utility that you can find here, there is probably others alternative tools with similar functionality. However, NirSoft utilities have some unique advantages over many other freeware and commercial products:
  • Most of the utilities in this site were developed in C++, which make them fast, small and effective.
  • My utilities are portable and mostly don't require any installation. While many software companies create a bloated installation package with size of 1 - 3 MB, the size of single utility in NirSoft is usually less than 100KB.
  •  All my utilities (except of a few very old tools) don't write anything to the Registry or to your profile folder. This means that you can use them from a USB Flash drive, without leaving traces in the computer that you use.
  • Most of my utilities can be used from command-line, without displaying any user interface.
  • You don't have to register or give your email in order to download from NirSoft.
  •  My utilities are completely freeware, without any catch.

Here's some examples of what you can find in NirSoft Web site:

My Top choices are WiFiInfoView , Icon Extract  and Password Recovery Tool.

Facebook Can Now Recognize You in Photos Without Even Seeing Your Face

Facebook’s facial recognition technology and how efficiently is tags you automatically in pictures. Facebook is constantly improving its technology to recognize you and now it doesn’t need to see your face anymore.

Facebook’s artificial intelligence team has been working these days on a new experimental facial recognition algorithm that recognizes the people even when their faces aren’t clear (most part covered, looking away etc.). Instead, it looks for other characteristics to recognize the person. For example– it could now recognize you using your hairstyle, clothes, posture, body etc. Awesome but creepy- right?

Yann LeCun, head of artificial intelligence at Facebook challenged himself and his teammates to create a new algorithm that could adapt itself according to the situations when Facebook is unable to see someone’s face clearly. So, this artificial intelligence works just like humans as we can recognize our friends even when their face is covered.

“There are a lot of cues we use. People have characteristic aspects, even if you look at them from the back,” says LeCun. “For example, you can recognise Mark Zuckerberg very easily, because he always wears a gray T-shirt.”

But the privacy implications too won’t be far once this sci-fi tech is launched as the people who don’t want to look at camera would surely raise questions regarding privacy concerns.

The Facebook AI team took about 40,000 pictures from Flickr with some pictures in which people’s face weren’t fully visible and processed them with the help of a sophisticated neural network. The final algorithm designed was able to recognize the people with covered faces with an excellent 83% accuracy which is better than other facial recognition technologies that make use of clear and uncovered faces.

Wrong send? You can now Undo Send for Gmail on the web

Got wrong send? An email meant for your husband goes to your boss. A message meant for your bridesmaids goes to your mother-in-law. Or the nuclear option: an awkward workplace reply all.

Previously a popular feature in Gmail Labs, and recently added to Inbox by Gmail, today we’re adding 'Undo Send' as a formal setting in Gmail on the web.

'Undo Send' allows people using Gmail to cancel a sent mail if they have second thoughts immediately after sending. The feature is turned off by default for those not currently using the Labs version, and can be enabled from the General tab in Gmail settings.

People currently using the Labs version of 'Undo Send' will have the setting turned on by default at launch.

Be it pop, rock, blue or techno, The internet has made it convenient for us to find all genres of music under one roof, Courtesy of free online music streaming sites. Due to which we are now able to choose and listen from thousands of artists from all over the world, without having to worry about the storage space.

With a seemingly ever-growing number of streaming music services available via the Web and dedicated mobile and tablet apps, choosing the one that best fits your need is an increasingly difficult task.

Sound quality: 128 kbps 192kbps 256 kbps 320 kbps depends on your device  mobile or computer system.

Best Online Music Streaming sites for Listening to Free Music

  1. Pandora : Pandora is an automatic music recommendation service , which offers one of the best ways to listen to free music online and even discover new artists.

Songza: The killer feature of this music recommendation site is its human-curated playlists based on mood, activity, genre, era and “situations” from breaking up to waking up and themes as specific as barbecues or pregame. In fact, Songza’s strictly about its playlists; you can’t search for particular songs or artists, although you can browse from a mind-boggling selection of soundtracks and musical vibes.
  13. Mixcloud: Touts itself as the place for long form audio. In real terms, this means that it’s a great repository for DJ mixes, radio shows, podcasts and any other longer audio formats. The most of the catalog “has strengths” in curated music, focused on Electronic Dance Music (EDM), hip-hop, jazz, funk and world music.
  14.  Deezer: The French company Deezer has been offering music streaming since way back in 2006, although back then it was called Blogmusik. It became a fully fledged business in August 2007.Deezer is now a mature service with a catalogue of 30 million tracks available for playback. Like Spotify, Deezer also gives you the option to import your local library of MP3’s for playback through the desktop client, but it stops short of actually cloud syncing your library so you can play them back from anywhere
  15. Xbox Music : Xbox Music is Microsoft’s music streaming service that ties together its desktop, gaming, mobile and tablet devices for true multi-platform access, and a replacement for Zune.Streaming is free and you can create radio stations based on a particular artist, but the music is ad-supported.Free streaming then becomes limited to 10 hours per month after six months, so if you want to carry on using it, realistically you’ll end up paying.

reddit will soon only be available over HTTPS

Ricky Ramirez, a Reddit systems administrator who goes by the username "rram" on the site, wrote in an official blog post this week that Reddit will join Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and other major sites to be encrypted with HTTPS.

The website will start encrypting its traffic over HTTPS, which is a more protected connection than standard HTTP.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connects your browser with webpages and files hosted on servers. HTTPS does the same thing but adds an extra layer of security, usually through the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

SSL works in three steps: First, it validates the identity of a website; then, it creates an encrypted connection; finally, it makes sure that the data was sent without an issue.

For websites where personal information is central to the experience, encrypted connections are an absolute must.

Reddit is trying to grow its user base and make itself more attractive to advertisers, so using HTTPS is a step in that general direction. The site will be completely switched over to HTTPS on June 29.

Pornhub is planning to shoot a film rated NSFW in Outer Space

Pornhub, said to be the world's number one pornsite, is planning to shoot a film rated NSFW in outer space in an attempt to the first zero-gravity adult film ever. They'll need help from aficionados though to make the dream a reality as they are now asking fans to donate via crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

Here's Pornhub's plea as posted on Indiegogo:

"One way or another, there are many elements about life in space that need careful consideration and research…especially sex. As such, Pornhub is teaming up with top-ranking adult studio Digital Playground in joining the ranks of Armstrong and Gagarin by pioneering a one of a kind mission to defy gravity, make history, and push the boundaries of intergalactic "Sexploration" by filming the first ever sextape in space. In doing so, we will not only be changing the face of the adult industry, we will also be chronicling how a core component of human life operates while in orbit. With some help from our generous fan base and extended community, we can all make this happen."

The estimated overall cost (and the target funding total on Indiegogo) is set at $3.4 million or roughly ₱153 million. Sixty percent of the funds will go to space-flight costs, 21% for the actual production, 2% for the funders perks and the rest to cover the talents' training, outfits, insurance and pay.

The movie is going to be called "Sexplorations," and if all goes according to plan, will be released late 2016. But if the project doesn't reach its funding goal, you're guaranteed to get your cash back.

In five days, the campaign has already raised $19,961, and has 56  days remaining to hit the target goal.

Asia’s mobile and broadband internet speeds, in one infographic

How fast is your internet? How much does it frustrate you? Although you likely have a few options for your broadband and mobile data plans, the answers to those questions are largely dictated by which country you’re in.
Data for the latest broadband and cellular speeds across Asia-Pacific reveal that Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan come out ahead in the home broadband race, but the picture is very different for those out of the house on their smartphones. It’s actually New Zealand, China, and Taiwan that surge ahead in mobile data speeds. The web speed data comes from Ookla’s Net Index, and then we’ve turned all those facts and stats into the infographic you see below.
While Asia beats the global average on broadband speeds, there’s still a huge difference between the haves and the have-nots. Singapore is blazing ahead on an average speed of 118.8 Mbps on broadband, but the Philippines is limping along at 3.6 Mbps. Even worse is that while Singapore’s fixed-line speeds have nearly doubled in the past year, the speed in the Philippines inched up a meager six percent in the past 12 months.
It’s a similar story of woe when it comes to Asia’s cellular speeds. While mobile data in New Zealand and China zooms along at an average of 27.7 and 27.6 Mbps respectively as 4G has caught on in a big way in both nations in the past year, people in Vietnam are staring at blank white pages on their smartphones as data trickles out at just 1.9 Mbps.
Here’s the full infographic:

Hired Professional Hacker Around the World

Hacker’s List, launched in November 2014, received more than 500 hacking jobs in the period of just three months. Anyone can post or bid on a hacking project listed on the website.

There are around 2740 anonymous hacker profiles displayed on the website who are ready to accomplish hacks for you if hired. Prices of hackers range from $28 to $300, and full hacking projects range in prices of $100 to $5000.

Payments are done anonymously — collection of fees when tasks are completed, nobody knows the identity of those involved in doing the work.

Every user registered on “Hacker’s List” website choose anonymous usernames in order to keep their actual identity hidden. However, there are physiological possibilities that most users keep their username same for multiple websites like I do ahaha....

Hacker’s List claims to provide "ethical hacking" services and asks users not to "use the service for any illegal purposes," as laid out in its 10-page long terms and conditions section.

How do I know the hacker I choose is legitimate?

Hacker's List is meant to provide only the best people and services. To do this we must review each Hacker that comes along to be hired.
  •     All freelances have to be approved by a Hacker's List Administrator before they are allowed to submit proposals.
  •     Hackers also have to maintain a minimum of a 3 star rating. Hackers that over charge or have a record of disputes are removed from our site.
  •     As another way to keep bad hackers for hire and scammers out: We charge a percentage of all projects the hacker takes. Those hackers with low ratings pay a higher percentage. This encourages hackers to have the highest level of service to maximize their earning potential.

However, the activities listed on the site are clearly illegal in some cases, so is it providing a so-called white hat hacking service?

Below are the stats:

  • 23% of projects relate to Facebook hacking, often involving a business dispute or jilted romance.
  • 14% of projects relate to Google account hacking, also involving a business dispute or jilted romance.
  • 8% of projects involve students asking for University’s computer systems to be hacked in order to improve their exam grades.
  • 3% of projects involve burying some embarrassing tidbit, essentially an ersatz Right to be Forgotten.

Do You Also want to Hack Facebook Accounts?

Many of the hacking tasks listed on Hacker’s List are related to breaking into Facebook accounts, hacking Gmail passwords, reading someone else’s chat logs from messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger.

In short, most of the requests from people are completely unlawful, very few requests are actually legal, and even most of the already completed projects fall under the category of crime.

Facebook Page Plugin

At F8 this year, Facebook announced the Page plugin — a new way to easily embed and promote any Facebook Page on your website. It allows people to like or share your Page directly from your website, helping to increase engagement and awareness. As a reminder, on June 23, websites that currently use the Like box will automatically update to the Page plugin — so your site will have the benefit of the plugin's new, updated look and functionality without any work required to make the change.

Page plugin features that you may find helpful include:

  • People visiting your website will see which of their friends like your Page.
  • People visiting your website will see the most recent posts from your Facebook Page. This is a great way to keep people up-to-date with the latest happenings from your Page.
  • The Page plugin language can be adjusted by loading a localized version of the Facebook JavaScript SDK.

Also, we're happy to share a few improvements to the Page plugin:

  • Improved Width Support: As requested by our developer community, we've made updates to the Page plugin to support a broader range of widths — as wide as 500px and as narrow as 180px. (Note that you may see minor layout changes due to space constraints when working with narrower widths. For example, at 180px you won't see the Share button).
  • More Flexible Sizing: We've added an additional parameter called adapt_container_width to ensure the Page plugin fits properly on websites. This lets developers control whether the Page plugin width will adjust to the size of its container, or if it will be a fixed width as specified by the width property.
  • Call to Action Buttons: The plugin now supports the same call-to-action buttons as Pages. For example, if your Page has a “Sign Up” or “Contact Us” button enabled, then that button now appears on the Page plugin on your website, with the same functionality that it has on your Page. This doesn't require any changes to the plugin configuration on your end.

Recently I posted Pop out Page Widget with this Plugin :
    http://www.gadget-technolog.blogspot.com/2015/04/new-facebook-pop-out-page-plugin-widget.html

Page admins can select from a group of call-to-action buttons — like Shop Now or Sign Up — to add to the top of their Page. The seven calls to action available are:
    1. Book Now
    2. Contact Us
    3. Use App
    4. Play Game
    5. Shop Now
    6. Sign Up
    7. Watch Video
We look forward to hearing about your experience with the new Page plugin as it rolls out. For more details, please go here.

Ask Toolbar will be marked as “Unwanted Software” (or Malware) by Microsoft’s Security Tools

Microsoft security products will detect programs with browser search protection functionality from June 1, 2015.

Non-compliant programs that exhibit such functionality will be detected by our software signatures that look for browser search protection code. Any program using code that can potentially perform search protection may be detected, regardless of whether the code is active.

To avoid detection, developers should remove any search protection code from their programs, regardless of whether it is functional or not.

We’ll be working with search protection developers and vendors who have completely disabled search protection functionality from their programs in alignment with our evaluation criteria.

Developers and vendors can email mpcreply@microsoft.com to start this process. They should provide links to side-by-side downloadable samples of:

Any programs with fixed behavior that does not exhibit search protection functionality, but has inactive, dormant search protection code.
Any older programs that are non-compliant with our evaluation criteria.

MMPC  help reduce the risk of having programs with search protection functionality turned off, but still containing non-compliant code, being detected as developers work on completely removing the non-compliant code.

Ask Toolbar  will be marked as “Unwanted Software” (or Malware) by Microsoft’s security tools Microsoft previously warned it would take action against software that tries to prevent users from changing their browser’s default search engine.

Ask Toolbar has its own special annoyances. When installed it switches your browser’s default search provider to Ask.com, and when you try to switch away it attempts to prevent you from doing so with a pop-up warning. If you’re not careful the toolbar can also reappear the next time you update Java.

Ask’s Toolbar has managed to live on as software bundled with Oracle’s Java for Windows. In March, Oracle also extended the Ask Toolbar download to Macs.

Bundleware is bad enough since even veteran PC users can be tricked into installing unwanted software—especially when you’re multitasking.

Example is Avira bundle with Ask Toolbar.

Microsoft warned that as of June 1 any program containing search protection functionality—code that tries to stop you from changing your browser or default search settings—would be treated as malware.

It appears Microsoft made good on its promise. Microsoft’s Malware Center now lists the Win32/Ask Toolbar as posing a “High threat to your PC.” The Ask Toolbar entry was first published in February, but was updated on Tuesday.

Microsoft’s security products including Windows Defender on Windows 8 and up, and Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 and Vista can now detect and remove the toolbar.

Password and Hash Encryption using DuckDuckGo Search Engine

A Private search engine DuckDuckGo claims that when you click on one of their search results, they do not send personally identifiable information along with your request to the third party.

Like Google dorks (advance search patterns), there are thousands of similar, but technically more useful search hacks are also available in DuckDuckGo called DuckDuckGoodies. Today I am going to share about Handy "Cryptography" using DuckDuckGo search engine.

Duckduckgo is a search engine which gives you a flexibility to perform such operations. It enables user to generate the hash of strings, find the algorithm used for generating a hash, give other equivalent hashes of certain hash input. You can also generate strong password by just searching on DuckDuckGo search engine.

Here are some Cryptography  tricks using DuckDuckGo Search Engine

    1.) Generating a Strong Password:
No password is foolproof, but by using a long, unique and strong password you can make your password complicated enough to slow down password cracking programs. DuckDuckGo provides you a feature of generating a strong password instantly.

     Search Term: password 15 strong
Where 15 is the password length.

2.) Generating a Hash: Hashing makes it difficult for an attacker to retrieve the original plain text string back from the encrypted password and it lets sites keep a list of hashes, rather than plain text passwords.

Using DuckDuckGo's Handy option, you can generate a hash value of any string just by using the following syntax on the search engine.

     Search Term :
    md5 blogmytuts
    sha512 blogmytuts
    sha blogmytuts
    sha224 blogmytuts
    sha256 blogmytuts
    sha384 blogmytuts

Where blogmytuts is the plain text string and sha512 or sha is the hashing algorithm.

3.) Identifying Hash Algorithm: Manual finding of the algorithm used for generating the hash is a tedious task. DuckDuckGo provides you an inbuilt hash identification tool, which allows you to identify the hashing algorithm used for generating the hash string given as input.

    Search Term :
    hash 4d76e126896c73f3a51bb910dfc791a4d9fa5075
    Where 4d76e126896c73f3a51bb910dfc791a4d9fa5075 is the hashes.

4.) Finding Plain text from Hashes: One more great feature provided by DuckDuckGo search engine is that it gives you plain text value and equivalent hash code in other algorithms. DuckDuckGo is not cracking hashes for you, but actually matches the hash value of the previously leaked database archive.

    Search Term:

    leakdb df2894fc405edfee0e0d506629cd9dfc

Where df2894fc405edfee0e0d506629cd9dfc is the hashing algorithm and leakdb the exploit keyword.

leakdb is basically a search engine for sensitive data disclosed by security breaches.Reverse hash search engine and automatic hash calculator - converts passwords to various popular hashes and vice versa, unknown passwords get calculated.

DISNEY IS ENTERING THE GAMING INDUSTRY WITH A STRANGE NEW PRODUCT PLAYMATION

Disney just announced what could be the hottest toy to hit shelves this Christmas. Playmation--Disney's attempt to get into the 'active play' play market that focuses heavily on wearable devices.

According to Tom Staggs, Chief Operating Officer of the Walt Disney Company, the product is, “play for the 21st century… physical play for a digital generation.”

Disney has used their partnership with Hasbro to help bring this product to life which, according to Staggs, "is a unique system of connected toys and wearables that combine the latest technology and Disney storytelling to inspire kids to run around and play using their imaginations.”

If you are still confused about what this product is, we all are, but to put it simply a kid will be able to put on Iron Man's repulser and be instantly linked with Jarvis, who will send them on missions.

These missions will require the kids to run around the house, jump behind furniture and dodge attacks. The repulser will be able to connect with other toys in the system too and will even be able to access power activators. It looks like Playmation will not be connected to a TV, and will force kids to use their imagination.

“Playmation takes the best the digital world has to offer and uses it to create supercharged, real world play." Said Leslie Ferraro, President of Disney Consumer Products.

"This is play updated for today’s kids," Ferraro continued, "bringing their imaginations to life as they go on active adventures alongside their favorite characters.”

Playmation will launch around October 2015, in the range of $120 dollars. Check out the trailer and demo below to get a little more info about what the Playmation is all about.

Are you ready to talk to JARVIS? Share this with your friends and start assembling your heroic team!

Microsoft has finally decided to bring OpenSSH client and server to Windows

The PowerShell team at Microsoft has announced that the company is going to support and contribute to OpenSSH community in an effort to deliver better SSH support in the PowerShell and Windows SSH software solutions.

Until now Unix and Linux system administrators have to download a third-party SSH client software like Putty on their Windows machines to securely manage their machines and servers remotely through Secure Shell protocol or Shell Session (better known as SSH).

For those who are unaware, SSH is basically designed to offer the best security when accessing another computer remotely. It not only encrypts the remote session, but also provides better authentication facilities, with features like secure file transferring and network port forwarding.

You don't need to deal with any third-party SSH client now, as Microsoft is working on supporting OpenSSH.

This is not first time Microsoft has planned to adopt SSH for its Windows platform, the company had tried to allow the secure shell protocol to be used within Windows twice but was unable to implement it.  Because this is the 3rd time the PowerShell team has attempted to support SSH.  The first attempts were during PowerShell V1 and V2 and were rejected.

However, developers who are eager to use this new functionality in PowerShell still have to wait for some time, as the project is still in the early planning phase. So far, there isn’t any definite release date.

The PowerShell team will update more information:

FBI SEIZED MEGAUPLOAD DOMAINS LINK TO SCAM ADS AND MALWARE

Well over three years have passed since Megaupload was shutdown, but there is still little progress in the criminal proceedings against the operation.

The United States hopes that New Zealand will extradite Kim Dotcom and his colleagues, but the hearings have been delayed several times already.

Meanwhile, several domain names including the popular Megaupload.com and Megavideo.com remain under the control of the U.S. Government. At least, that should be the case. In reality, however, they’re now being exploited by ‘cyber criminals.’

Instead of a banner announcing that the domains names have been seized as part of a criminal investigation they now direct people to a Zero-Click adverting feed. This feed often links to malware installers and other malicious ads.

One of the many malicious “ads” the Megaupload and Megavideo domain names are serving links to a fake BBC article, suggesting people can get an iPhone 6 for only £1.

The Department of Justice has made a grave error as several seized Megaupload domains are now being exploited for nefarious purposes. A few days ago both Megaupload.com and Megavideo.com began directing visitors to scams and malware, presumably because the FBI's cybercrime unit lost control of the main nameserver.

And here is another example of a malicious ad prompting visitors to update their browser.

The question that immediately comes to mind is this: How can it be that the Department of Justice is allowing the domains to be used for such nefarious purposes?

Looking at the Whois records everything seems to be in order. The domain name still lists Megaupload Limited as registrant, which is as it was before. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The nameserver PLEASEDROPTHISHOST15525.CIRFU.BIZ, on the other hand, triggers several alarm bells.

CIRFU refers to the FBI’s Cyber Initiative and Resource Fusion Unit, a specialized tech team tasked with handling online crime and scams. The unit used the CIRFU.NET domain name as nameserver for various seized domains, including the Mega ones.

Interestingly, the CIRFU.NET domain now lists “Syndk8 Media Limited” as registrant, which doesn’t appear to have any connections with the FBI. Similarly, CIRFU.BIZ is not an official CIRFU domain either and points to a server in the Netherlands hosted by LeaseWeb.

It appears that the domain which the Department of Justice (DoJ) used as nameserver is no longer in control of the Government. Perhaps it expired, or was taken over via other means.

As a result, Megaupload and Megavideo are now serving malicious ads, run by the third party that controls the nameserver.

This is quite a mistake for one of the country’s top cybercrime units, to say the least. It’s also one that affects tends of thousands of people, as the Megaupload.com domain remains frequently visited.

Commenting on the rogue domains, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom notes that the people who are responsible should have known better.

“With U.S. Assistant Attorney Jay Prabhu the DOJ in Virginia employs a guy who doesn’t know the difference between civil & criminal law. And after this recent abuse of our seized Mega domains I wonder how this guy was appointed Chief of the Cybercrime Unit when he can’t even do the basics like safeguard the domains he has seized,” he tells TF.

“Jay Prabhu keeps embarrassing the U.S. government. I would send him back to law school and give him a crash course in ‘how the Internet works’,” Dotcom adds.

Making matters worse for the Government, Megaupload.com and Megavideo.com are not the only domain names affected. Various poker domains that were previously seized, including absolutepoker.com and ultimatebet.com, also link to malicious content now.

While the Government appears to have lost control of the old nameservers, it can still correct the problem through a nameserver update at their end. However, that doesn’t save those people who had their systems compromised during recent days, and it certainly won’t repair the PR damage.
